NSF-CMi Asia Pacific and Pathumtani Provincial Agriculture and Cooperative set up a Post Harvest Handling training course for a total of 1000 local farmers between March 2010 and June 2010. The training course was designed to help rice and fresh produce farmers improve their crop productivity, crop safety and exporting requirements, as well as prepare some of the farmers who will be undertaking future training on the GlobalGap standard.
Pathumtani, which is in the Greater Bangkok Metropolitian Area in Thailand, is located on the alluvial plain of the Chao Phraya River and is an important agricultural zone for the country. The main agricultural crops in the province are rice and vegetables such as lettuce, lemon grass and Chinese Kale. The two largest agricultural markets in Thailand, namely Si Mum Mueang Market and Talad Thai Market are located in Pathumtani because of the large amount of agricultural production in the region. There are also several large distribution centers in the province for major national and international suppliers.
Understanding the importance of the Pathumtani province for Thailand’s agricultural industry, the Pathumtani Provincial Agriculture and Cooperative has been developing the region’s agricultural activities for several years. It recognizes that to develop agriculture in the region, one of the key areas is to provide local farmers with knowledge to enhance their growing activities and this is being achieved through various agriculture training courses. NSF-CMi is helping to provide this training through local language training sessions with 100 farmers in each class.
