Leading Food Assurer comments on Food Standards Agency changes
NSF-CMi, the leading independent food assurance and certification company, has commented positively on the news that the UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) will survive, albeit with a narrower remit and renewed focus on food safety.
NSF-CMi has been closely involved with a number of important FSA initiatives, including the innovative ‘Safer food, better business’ (SFBB) approach to help small businesses put in place food safety management procedures and comply with food hygiene regulations, and is therefore well placed to understand the impact of the work the Agency has carried out.
Geoff Brown, Managing Director of NSF-CMi’s Consultancy and Technical Services Division, commented: “We are pleased to see that the important work the FSA has undertaken to date will not be lost. They have succeeded in raising the profile and importance of food safety across the UK and the renewed focus on food safety, now that responsibility for nutrition and labelling has returned to other Government departments, should enable them to continue their work effectively.”
The move of responsibility for nutrition policy to the Department of Health and for identified food labelling and composition policies to Defra has raised concerns that a less focussed and integrated approach will ensue. However NSF-CMi regards the move as rational and is optimistic that the expertise and knowledge built up during the development of current programmes will transfer intact to their new departments.
